USP 61 product safety testing is required to ensure that a product preparation complies with a pre-set specification for microbiological quality. This enumeration test is performed as a plate count to determine if a product is contaminated with bacteria and/or fungi above acceptable levels. In a similar function, USP 62 testing evaluates for specific pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella species, Clostridium species, Candida albicans and bile-tolerant gram negative bacteria. USP 51 is a preservative/antimicrobial effectiveness test that is commonly required for products which utilize a preservative system, such as drug products for multiple use, e.g. injection, otic, oral, nasal, topical and antacid products, cosmetics, and personal care products (e.g. shampoo, conditioner, lotion).
